Portraits: charlotte’s sitting session, green bay, wisconsin

Green-Bay-Family-Photos-Indoors-Studo-Baby-Photographer-Infant-Six-MonthsMost of the time we consider ourselves outdoor photographers, but here in Wisconsin weather can be unpredictable when it comes to photographing little ones. We decided to hold Charlotte’s sitting milestone session indoors with light, springy colors inspired by April (and that completely adorable kitty dress!) It’s always amazing to me what a different experience it is from photographing newborns at a few weeks old and having them return at six months. The last time we saw Charlotte she was a sleepy, squishy bundle, and now she is smiling, interactive, very observant, and of course, mobile. Sitting sessions are one of my favorites because of all these changes and the amount of personality that can come through in the images. We can’t wait to see how much she changes by the time one year photos roll around!

Portraits: welcome baby emerson, newborn photos

Green-Bay-Newborn-Baby-Photos-Family-Siblings-Sister-Love-1 Green-Bay-Newborn-Baby-Photos-Family-Siblings-Sister-Love-2A newborn with a toddler for a big sister can often be a challenge when it comes to photos, but between Emerson’s chill attitude and Harper’s excitement for being involved in pictures, there was no trouble whatsoever. We got some sweet, sleepy baby pictures (seriously, those eyelashes though), some bright smiles and adorable pouts from the tot, and of course, snuggly mommy and daddy with new baby photos. It was an absolute joy to share these images with the Cassy and Michael yesterday, and I can’t wait to see the prints as they arrive.

Simple photos of the newest moments are my favorite thing about newborn sessions – no frilly outfits or cheesy props needed. There is just nothing like capturing all the baby goodness while they are at their smallest. Congratulations, Cassy, Michael, and Harper on your new arrival!

Portraits: elizabeth’s sitting session, green bay, wisconsin

Green-Bay-Infant-Child-6-months-studio-family-photographyElizabeth is the happiest baby. She is always full of giggles and smiles, never nervous to be held by friends and family who love her snuggly nature. Elizabeth was eight months for her sitting session and everyone was unsure how it would go that day because she had missed her nap and just gotten over a sickness. We assured them that we could always reschedule, but decided to give Lizzie a little time to adjust first. In no time, she was back to her happy self – giggling, sticking out her tongue, and flashing the bright smile she inherited from daddy. I love photographing little ones at the sitting stage because of how much personality comes out (it’s also one of the last stages before they become master crawlers, and can sneak away from us!) Can’t wait to watch you grow, Baby Elizabeth!

Portraits: welcome baby vicent, newborn photos

Green-Bay-Newborn-Baby-Photos-Family-Boy-Natural-Neutral-Studio-CuteIf you’re like me, the chilly days that have settled in this past week have made you feel the need to get extra cozy. I’ve been thinking about heavy quilts, good books, and strong cups of coffee. And if those things don’t quite warm you up, how about a new baby boy born just before Christmas day, swaddled in fur and his mama’s arms?

Baby Vicent was born December 20th, to Tiffany and Carlos. He was ten days new for his first photos with us.  He did such a good job and slept through his entire session, just waking to eat.  Baby Vicent is surrounded by so much love by all his family here in the state and by his other half of the family in Spain who can’t wait to meet him. In the meantime, we’re so glad that they’ll have these early photos of this tiny boy to remember how small he was as he grows bigger. Congratulations to entire family!

Personal Post: two best friends and 30 years of marriage

Southern-Door-County-Country-Anniversary-Photos-Photographer-Wisconsin-30th-LoveFor a few years after graduating, I worked in a portrait studio (one of those ten minute sittings, photo collage, six background options commercial chains). People came in, we pulled forward a matching backdrop, posed them the same as the last group, and sent them home with the coupon deal of the week. No need for names or stories. Working there helped me define what it was I wanted out of photography in a way I don’t think I would have otherwise been able to articulate.

I know how valuable images are. And I know how much more a photograph can mean if it captures who the person is, right then. It isn’t always a portrait, in fact I would argue that more often it’s a snapshot: cousins climbing an old maple tree in the front yard, grandpa in his teens laying in the grass strumming a guitar, mom on her second easter cheesing for the camera in their very first apartment. These are the photos that stick with us because they feel like the person we love.

This September my parents celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. Their story is a real story of two friends building a home, raising a family, and overcoming struggles. A vinyl backdrop and studio lights couldn’t tell that story. My outdoorsy dad and adventurous mom needed to be photographed in a place that characterized who they are and how they cherish one another.

More than anything the way they show their love it is through sharing their time and interests. The location we chose is not just a field filled with old buildings to make the world of Pinterest swoon; it is the place where together they hunt, and hike, and snowmobile once winter arrives. It is a physical place that symbolizes their love. I know this, and they know this, which means when I look at these images I see mom and dad, jeanie and rick, two best friends who decided to get married, and did, 30 years ago.

Weddings: kayla & zach, vintage brewers wedding at timber rattlers stadium

Brewers-Wedding-Timber-Rattlers-Stadium-Photography-Wedding-Vintage-Appleton-Doty-Park-Baseball-Neenah-Outdoors-Green-Bay1 Brewers-Wedding-Timber-Rattlers-Stadium-Photography-Wedding-Vintage-Appleton-Doty-Park-Baseball-Neenah-Outdoors-Green-Bay2I love weddings where couples take chances and plan their wedding to suit themselves (not some silly idea of what a wedding should be). This was the greatest part about Kayla and Zach’s wedding. They are big time sports fans, with Brewers baseball topping the list. When they got engaged and began to plan, it only made sense to incorporate this love of a team that bonded them together. Kayla and Zach held their wedding day on the field of the Timber Rattlers Stadium in Appleton, Wisconsin. The girls were in royal blue dresses with bright yellow shoes (the vintage Brewers colors) and the guys had boutonnieres made from baseballs.

The day was filled with incredible details: a popcorn bar, stadium tickets for place-cards, and centerpieces made from worn baseballs in glass pillars. Kayla and Zach had thought of everything, and it made for the best guest experience – with surprises around every corner. (We loved it too!) After the ceremony, we spent some time photographing on the field at the stadium, and in the late afternoon, headed over to Doty Park for that warm, glowing October light that makes people like me fall in love with autumn. Congratulations to Kayla and Zach!

Portraits: welcome baby lennox, newborn photos

Green_Bay_Newborn_Baby_Photos_Family_Girl_Studio_Cute_HeadbandAs it gets colder outside, we all start to cling to things that makes us feel cozy. Sometimes that’s a chestnut praline latte or a new wool scarf, but today let it be these snuggly newborn photos of baby Lennox. Nothing like a little new baby squish to remind us of thankfulness as we ease our way into the upcoming holiday week.

Lennox did a great job for her session. She was three weeks new, but arrived early and small, so she was perfect. She liked the white noise and drifted off peacefully as we moved her around and positioned her tiny fingers. Katie and Kyle made the trip down to Green Bay from Door County (my family home) for their newborn session and we’re glad they did. Congratulations, Katie and Kyle!

Portraits: welcome baby charlotte, newborn photos

Green_Bay_Newborn_Baby_Photos_Family_Girl_Studio_CreativeCharlotte Aurora, what a perfect name. Charlotte was just the sweetest little girl for her session. She was sleepy and settled and didn’t mind us posing and wrapping her up. She snuggled into mom and dad for family photos and just opened her eyes now and then (as if she had to check up on us and see what was going on).

Ideal newborn session age is 5-14 days, and Charlotte was perfectly in this window which means she was flexible enough to try out all sorts of poses (including the cute “froggy” pose at the top that I adore). Emily was smart about planning Charlotte’s session this summer so we could prepare to meet their needs and keep space open in our busy October schedule when baby girl was due to arrive.

Emily and Graham are the most relaxed new parents. They fawn over Charlotte, talk to her, and play with her. Together they are attentive without being guarded, and it’s pretty wonderful. Congratulations on your new arrival, Emily and Graham!
