Door County and Anderson Dock Senior Photos

Door County Senior Photo SessionDoor County Senior PhotographerMost of the time seniors come to us with a sense of what they want — they want fields or water or brick or flowers — but every now and then they come to us with specific ideas. For Brynn, that specific idea was this big bending willow tree in the back of her family’s home. It wasn’t so much a location as it was an object that connected her to childhood. What Brynn didn’t know, is that I’ve also always been obsessed with willows — their droopy leaves that form canopies and filter in warm, ambient light. There is just something so romantic about their beauty which was perfectly matched with Brynn’s lace dress and soft curls.

After capturing some favorites at the willow tree, we headed farther north from Fish Creek into Ephraim for a stop at Anderson Dock, a Door County icon. The clouds covered most of our sunset, but we got a light breeze that blew Brynn’s hair beautifully, and the heavy blue of the sky made the oranges that peeked out all more dramatic. Such a fun and beautiful session!

Door County Greenhouse and Beach Senior Photos

Door County Senior Photos Door County PhotographersI’ve been looking forward to photographing Sophie’s senior photos for years. She’s one of the art students who I work with one-on-one up in Door County and we’ve known each other for a long time. So when the session planning began, we had many ideas for themes, locations, and outfits, and I couldn’t be happier with all the variety!

Sophie goes to Sevastopol High School in Door County. She’s a great student, involved in many activities, interested in arts, languages, and culture, and loves her animals. She is incredibly smart, kind, and conscientious. For her session, she knew she wanted to begin at Sunnypoint Gardens greenhouse, which was fun and original. She planned that stop with a silk, floral shirt that paired perfectly with the magenta in the flowers (I love color relationships in photographs — blame my art background!)  After that, we hopped across the street to Cornerstone Suites to photograph with the rustic buildings and field of wildflowers. Our last stop was for sunset at a Door County beach.

We were lucky enough to have the most beautiful calm day, and since fall was just around the corner, we had the beach all to ourselves. Sophie took off her Converse and walked out on the pier where the horizon was starting to blur water into sky and giving us the soft, even light that is so lovely for portraits. Best wishes on your senior year, Sophie!

Door County Senior Photos at Pebble Beach and Anderson Dock

Door County Senior Photos Anderson Dock Photos, Ephraim, WisconsinRachel’s family has been traveling up to Door County for years. They have a place along the water in Sister Bay where they spend family weekends (including many cozy winter days!) So when Rachel started planning for her high school senior photo session, she knew exactly what she wanted to do.

Pebble Beach is located just around the corner from their condo, so they knew it’s beauty and felt connected to the place. We began our session in the evening with bright sun glowing off the water and waves splashing up on the rocks. Our next location was chosen because its a Door County staple, and (in my opinion) the best place to see a Door County sunset. That place is Anderson Dock a pier in Ephraim featuring The Hardy Gallery covered in graffitied names of visitors.

When we arrived, the sun was low enough for golden hour light, and we stayed long enough to capture a brilliant sunset. With the high water levels we’ve had this year, there was this infinity pool effect of the water meeting up with the top of the pier. It was the perfect magic for a summer session. Congratulations on your senior year and upcoming graduation, Rachel!

Seniors: hope, cave point, door county & downtown green bay

It’s amazing how much variety we can capture when seniors pick two really cool locations! We started Hope’s senior portrait session in the summer at Cave Point in Door County and ended it in fall in downtown Green Bay. The variety of the seasons, wardrobe, and setting made it such a fun session for us to photograph. The Niagara Escarpment is always gorgeous to photograph and even though the water has been high this year, Hope braved the rocky climb down to the water and was rewarded with beautiful Lake Michigan waves crashing and pouring over the rock face. When we met up in Green Bay, the leaves were just turning gold and we were able to get an urban mood with brick, murals, and industry for our backgrounds. So much to love about this session!

Seniors: clara, jackson harbor, washington island, door county

This past winter I shared with Ben the fact that I longed to shoot a session on Washington Island. In spring we started chatting about how to make that happen, then out of nowhere, I received an email from Clara. Clara’s family has enjoyed the island for generations and for her it’s a home-away-from-home, the place to get away and reconnect with nature, family, and herself. With both of her parents as teachers, Clara and her sister are able to spend the majority of each summer at their cottage on Jackson Harbor.

For those who don’t know, my family has an old farmhouse on orchard land in Baileys Harbor that I connect to the same way Clara connects to her cottage, so when we started messaging I knew her session would be a perfect fit for us to photograph. After FaceTiming to plan her session, we set a date and packed our gear to board the Washington Island Ferry. The ferry departed from Gills Rock and took us across Death’s Door to the island. It was a beautiful, breezy ride. When we arrived, Clara’s family was there to greet us and share the island and all the spots they’ve enjoyed there over the years. It’s amazing to me all the memories that a place can hold, and how those memories can become the legacy of a family. Clara’s senior portraits were meant to be on Washington Island; anywhere else wouldn’t quite have been the same. Enjoy your senior year, Clara!

Senior Session: isabelle, door county beach & downtown de pere

Isabelle attends East De Pere High School where she is heavily involved in clubs, Spanish, and athletics. Outside of school she is a talented figure skater and teaches figure skating on the side in addition to her hostessing job. Her variety of interests and fashionable sense of style made for a fun and dynamic session (including a late August dip in Lake Michigan for some splashing and twirling!) The family beach house was lovely and we adored photographing on the Door County waterfront. Downtown De Pere gave us the perfect balance with some richer colors, rougher textures, and some great urban vibes. Congratulations, Isabelle, enjoy your senior year!

Senior Session: anthony, lambeau field & anderson dock, door county

Door-County-Senior-Photos-Anderson-Dock-Senior-Portraits-Pictures-Ephraim-Photographer-1 Lambeau-Field-Senior-Photos-Green-Bay-Packers-Senior-Portraits-Pictures-Photographer-2When you have a passion for something as great as Anthony’s passion for the Green Bay Packers, distance is no obstacle. Anthony and his father, Michael, planned Anthony’s senior photos as a destination session from their home in Minnesota. Each year the two of them travel to Lambeau for a game, and it was obvious to the two of them that Lambeau Field would be the perfect location for Anthony’s class photos. I loved the idea of a destination senior session, and we began planning for the two day event with part of the session on the waterfront in Ephraim. Both days had gorgeous, warm weather and we loved getting to know Anthony and his family! Congratulations, Anthony, enjoy your senior year!

Senior Session: bryan, downtown sturgeon bay, door county

Door-County-Senior-Photos-Sturgeon-Bay-Downtown-Urban-Photographer-Pictures-Portraits-High-School-Green-Bay-Pics-NauticalWe snuck Bryan’s senior portrait session in just in time to make the yearbook cut-off. This made for a chilly day outside in early March, but it also created fun and original images. Bryan is a senior at Gibraltar High School in Fish Creek, although he and his family are originally from Arizona. He is thinking about attending UW-Whitewater and studying medical translating, and possibly playing soccer (he plays forward for Gibraltar’s soccer team). We photographed his session in downtown Sturgeon Bay for a fresh, urban feel. Bryan was very easy to get to know, and we loved his sense of style!

As a funny session note, since it was such a windy afternoon, we ducked into business alcoves between shots to keep warm. While in front of a jewelry store, the Sturgeon Bay Police Department showed up investigating a possible break in at that business. We explained why we were there, and they checked the doors to make sure they were secure. I’m guessing wind gusts must have triggered it, but it was a funny little moment that Bryan will get to remember his session by. (Also, we would have been pretty terrible burglars just standing casually outside the door wearing cameras and watching the police with interest.) Congratulations, Bryan, enjoy the rest of your senior year!

Senior Session: nicole, sturgeon bay waterfront

Door-County-Senior-Photos-Stone-Harbor-Photographer-Senior-Portraits-White-Lace-Inn-Steel-Bridge-Sturgeon-BayWe had the most beautiful overcast day for Nicole’s senior session in downtown Sturgeon Bay. For everyone wishing for sun on their session date, here’s a little secret: bright, cloudy days are the best! The clouds act as a natural softbox and give us beautiful, even light that could not be more flattering.

It’s always fun for me to have seniors with a great sense of style like Nicole has. Patterned high-waisted skirt (love), and a chambray shirt with leggings (which is the perfect outfit to walk that line between summer and fall). It was great getting to know Nicole and hear all about her future aspirations. Have a great final year, and best wishes for a bright future, Nicole!
