Victorian Evergreens Limited Edition Sessions in Green Bay

Green Bay Family Photographers Winter Family PhotosEach spring and fall we plan themed one-day-only Limited Edition Sessions. Rather than host classic “mini sessions” that can feel rushed, cheesy, or over the top, our Limited Edition Sessions are centered around the changing of the seasons and include a full 50 minutes. Themes never repeat, which means it’s a great way to get a variety of images that are totally unique! This fall our Limited Edition Session theme is “Victorian Evergreens” with a 1800s velvet couch and vintage set in a grove of evergreens right here in Green Bay.

Green Bay Family Photographer Outdoor Spring Pictures BirthdayEach year we host Limited Edition Sessions with an exclusive theme and location in spring and fall. Although I am tempted to call them “mini sessions”, that doesn’t do a good job of describing what they are. When we were new photographers just starting out, we did “mini sessions” a few times a year, but I hated how rushed everything was. It reminded me of my portrait studio days with ten minute sessions and a boot out the door. The photos were prop-heavy, overly posed, and just didn’t feel like us. We fell away from special sessions for a number of years, and returned with a new concept three years ago — longer times so everyone can settle in and be playful, no cheesy props, and letting the natural work speak for itself by choosing dates and locations that emphasized the beautiful changing seasons we have here in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Our first Limited Edition Spring Sessions in 2017 were in a Door County apple orchard surrounded by blossoms, the next year we offered tulip sessions, and this year I was dreaming of the perfect location in a grove of lilacs. Lucky for us, Alex and her family offered up their home which was landscaped with flowering trees, fruit blossoms, and, of course, lilacs. The location was a perfect match to our vision and the date lined up exactly with peak bloom; it couldn’t have been more perfect! Toward the end of the day we photographed Alex, Jake, and their kiddos at their home among the lilacs. It was a beautiful afternoon to make special memories for a special family.

Lilacs Spring Photos Green Bay PhotographerI love photographing toddlers. Many photographers dread this age — they like sleeping newborns or well-behaved grade-schoolers best — but I love the energy toddlers bring! There is no “sit and smile”, there is no convincing “cheese”, but there is always big play. We will get down in the grass, we will tickle and tease, we will be our most ridiculous (anyone who has had photos with Ben knows this!) And the reward for getting to their level is unbridled laughs from kiddos who haven’t learned to be self-conscious or “tone it down”. They are completely themselves, making each photograph their own.

As a mom of a toddler, I know the age is not without difficulty. There are tantrums over which shoes to wear (galoshes every day if you ask Juniper) and there is no logic that can penetrate their sadness when you won’t let them play in the thunderstorm, but the other side of it is little lessons they teach over and over reminding us to be in the moment. Stop and smell the flowers, see that the dandelions are as pretty as the lilacs, and enjoy the time we have with the people we love best.

Limited Edition Lilac Session, Spring Family Photos in Green Bay, Wisconsin

Green Bay Family Photographer Lilacs apple blossom picturesWhen Nicky contacted us about a family session for herself, her husband, and their little girl, Hayden, she admitted that the last professional photos she had been in were her senior portraits. Sometimes people are afraid to tell us the last time they had photos, but we know what it’s like to be a parent, and we know how time can fly by and how easy it is to wait for the “perfect time” — when the weather is better, when the baby reaches a milestone, when we “improve” something about ourselves that makes us feel worthy of being in photos. Of course, deep down we know there is no perfect time and every season of parenthood is both beautiful and difficult. We were honored to be the first to photograph this loving little family.

Even with it being her first pictures, Hayden was a pro in front of the camera. She was happy and ready to play all the silly games we had in mind. She snuggled daddy and nuzzled noses with mommy. The lilacs were in full bloom for our Limited Edition Spring Sessions and she gathered the blossoms up and gave them a big sniff, so proud that they matched the purple of her dress. In short, we loved photographing this session!

Green Bay Family Photographers Green Bay Family PicturesJust a few weeks before this session there was a foot of snow on the ground as Courtney and Tanner celebrated their engagement. Now, in March, we celebrate their family! This was Ainsely’s first official portrait session and she did a great job! Baxter (the first baby) was also included in the session and brought extra joy and energy to the scene. The four of them are so sweet and we were blessed with such lovely spring weather and bright sunshine. Happy babies and a happy families make for beautiful photos that make our hearts happy! (Be sure to check out Courtney and Tanner’s Engagement and stay tuned for wedding photos next year!)

Waterfront Family Session at Sunset, Green Bay

We Photographed this beautiful family at their home on Nicolet Drive along the mouth of the bay in Green Bay. When we first met, we visited them at their home to get an idea of the space, noting the gorgeous waterfront, docks, and trees. We planned for sunset photos and were pleased with the cotton-candy pinks and soft blue tones we had on that calm day. The family even decided to end their session splashing in the water! What a fun session and a wonderful family to work with!

Cozy Cabin Family Session

The new year has rolled around, and we’re busy making plans for next season, but as we do, we have a few favorite sessions left to blog. One of those is Amanda’s cozy log cabin session as part of our Limited Edition Seasonal Sessions we hold each spring and fall. Amanda is our web designer, and very talented, so we’ve had the pleasure of working with her as her photographers and as her clients. This session was her family’s first official family photos and it was a blast! Jameson is smart and funny, full of brilliant ideas, and clearly has lots of love for Amanda and Jason. We loved teasing and joking and making images together! Cheers!

Winter Family Portraits at Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary

The skies were bright and the wind was calm for Vicent’s third birthday and family session. We met at Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary in Green Bay, which is a favorite spot for the family to explore and feed the birds. Snow had melted and left puddles perfect for splashing in galoshes, and geese and ducks were flying and landing in the water. Vicent has a December birthday and so photo sessions are always on the chilly side, but with their warm wool clothes, boots and scarves, the family kept warm and we enjoyed the morning adventure. I love the candids of him watching the birds, asking questions, and splashing in the puddles! Happy Birthday, Vicent!

Three Generations Cozy Cabin Family Session

Three generations of beautiful women to photograph at a cozy winter cabin? Yes, please! Danielle and her family booked one of our Limited Edition Cozy Cabin Sessions this November as an opportunity to get Hazel’s four year photos done, have images for the yearly Christmas card, and get pictures as a family. Grandmother, Debbie, was along to help out with the pup and jumped in for a few photos with her girls. We loved Danielle’s fur-lined puffer vest and Hazel’s buffalo plaid — too cute! Their session was at the windiest point in the day, but Hazel was tough and a couple car breaks with some hand warmers and a little teasing by Ben helped her make it through. Bentley was his puppy self, happy with the snow and snacks, and pleased to have room to run. The family traveled from Wausau area to Green Bay for their family session and we’re so glad they did!

Family Portraits in Green Bay

A few years ago we stepped away from doing “mini sessions”. One of the main reasons for this was that we felt rushed. If a kiddo took some time to warm up (introverts get it) or a baby needed a bottle break, half our time was already over and we didn’t have room to make exceptions. I felt like we weren’t delivering our best work, so we just stopped doing them altogether.

Then last year, Ben and I dreamed up our own type of session. We asked ourselves what we would want if it was our family, and that’s when we came up with Limited Edition Sessions. Limited Edition Sessions still have the exciting location and exclusive dates, but they also have a spacious time slot (nearly an hour) so we’re not worried about feeling rushed. The long session time alows us to photograph in our favorite way, mixing posed and candid photos and cuing families with activities to help them interact and play. Limited Edition Sessions are also lower cost to allow new clients to “try us out” and families with older kiddos to come back for fun, shorter sessions.

Nicole, Jeff and their family are new to us this year. Their girls, Alex and Quinn, are so sweet and so happy! It was a pleasure getting to know them and make pictures together on that snowy Saturday! Happy Holidays!
