Retro Arcade & Bowling Alley Senior Photos, Door County, Wisconsin

When Liam and his mom arrived to discuss senior photos, before we even got chatting, Liam explained that he was not looking for traditional senior photos in a nature or urban setting. Liam is an artist, set to attend MIAD in fall, and he wanted his photos to be more than a documentation of his graduation. He wanted them to speak to who he is and function as half portrait, half art statement. As many of you know, my background is a bachelors in studio arts, so this spoke to my roots.

Retro 80s Arcade and Bowling Alley

When we got talking about Liam’s vision, he saw a retro bowling alley and abstract lighting. I knew the perfect location immediately: Cherry Lanes arcade and bowling alley in Sturgeon Bay. Liam and his family are not from Door County and weren’t familiar, but as I described the teal and orange seats, vintage arcade games, and our strategy for adding flash gels to create colored lighting, they knew we were on the right track.

At Cherry Lanes we started in the bowling alley with editorial posing and playful lighting. Once in the arcade we added more flash gels to mimic ambient game lighting and got fun with lifestyle shots. Liam was up for everything we wanted to try, even when Ben suggested Liam climb under a pinball machine to catch the green rope lighting. (It was worth it!)

Thanks for trusting us with your vision, Liam, we see lots of great things coming in your future. And special thanks to Cherry Lanes for hosting us!

Senior Session: bryan, downtown sturgeon bay, door county

Door-County-Senior-Photos-Sturgeon-Bay-Downtown-Urban-Photographer-Pictures-Portraits-High-School-Green-Bay-Pics-NauticalWe snuck Bryan’s senior portrait session in just in time to make the yearbook cut-off. This made for a chilly day outside in early March, but it also created fun and original images. Bryan is a senior at Gibraltar High School in Fish Creek, although he and his family are originally from Arizona. He is thinking about attending UW-Whitewater and studying medical translating, and possibly playing soccer (he plays forward for Gibraltar’s soccer team). We photographed his session in downtown Sturgeon Bay for a fresh, urban feel. Bryan was very easy to get to know, and we loved his sense of style!

As a funny session note, since it was such a windy afternoon, we ducked into business alcoves between shots to keep warm. While in front of a jewelry store, the Sturgeon Bay Police Department showed up investigating a possible break in at that business. We explained why we were there, and they checked the doors to make sure they were secure. I’m guessing wind gusts must have triggered it, but it was a funny little moment that Bryan will get to remember his session by. (Also, we would have been pretty terrible burglars just standing casually outside the door wearing cameras and watching the police with interest.) Congratulations, Bryan, enjoy the rest of your senior year!

Senior Session: nicole, sturgeon bay waterfront

Door-County-Senior-Photos-Stone-Harbor-Photographer-Senior-Portraits-White-Lace-Inn-Steel-Bridge-Sturgeon-BayWe had the most beautiful overcast day for Nicole’s senior session in downtown Sturgeon Bay. For everyone wishing for sun on their session date, here’s a little secret: bright, cloudy days are the best! The clouds act as a natural softbox and give us beautiful, even light that could not be more flattering.

It’s always fun for me to have seniors with a great sense of style like Nicole has. Patterned high-waisted skirt (love), and a chambray shirt with leggings (which is the perfect outfit to walk that line between summer and fall). It was great getting to know Nicole and hear all about her future aspirations. Have a great final year, and best wishes for a bright future, Nicole!
