In 2017 Nancy’s daughter Amy married her partner, Steph. Nancy, a creative soul herself, designed all the floral arrangements, contacted vendors, and helped bring the wedding day vision to life. We were one of the photographers she suggested to the couple, and after a short interview, they chose us! We got to document Amy and Steph’s wedding day at Woodwalk Gallery in Door County!
As Nancy and Gary’s anniversary approached, Amy decided to gift them a session with us. She knew they didn’t feel particularly comfortable in front of the camera and that they didn’t consider themselves photogenic, but she also knew how much it would mean to them to have beautiful photos of their love story, out in nature together.

As Nancy received her gift and we started to plan, Nancy let me know all the things she was worried about. As a naturally anxious person myself, all these worries were so completely relatable. I think oftentimes the anxiety of having the photos taken is a measure of how much you know you will value the images once they’re complete. We worry because we care.

I talked through all the ways we could plan for clothing, beauty routine, locations, and lighting to make the most of the session. We talked about ways to include their dog (a puppy, full of energy) and get him to do his best job for the camera. We discussed weather and backup plans and everything in advance so they could both feel excited for the session day.
On the day of the session, the sun shined strongly through the trees and fields in De Pere, lighting them up a bright golden hue. We hiked down the trails past old growth trees, over the bridges and into the fields full of bright mustard and sumac. We chatted and got comfortable, and took the time to warm up to feel natural in front of the camera.
I’m so glad we got to make these images for such a sweet couple. Happy anniversary, Nancy and Gary!
