The first time I photographed the Bousley family, Luke was just a little kid, fishing off the dock at his family’s cabin. His sister, Emma, even smaller, I remember most clearly making a s’more around the campfire, mallow smeared across her face as it always is with little kids.

Now, so many years later, my children are in that stage. My family is comprised of two little adventurers figuring it all out. And the Bousley family? Well, they’ve sent their oldest off to college just as I sent my oldest off to 4K. Time is such a strange thing.

When Luke’s graduation from Southern Door High School was looming, Missy reached out to plan for his Door County senior photo session. The location felt obvious, fated even. The whole family is active and nature oriented — they run, they play, they fish — and with Otumba Park in their backyard in Sturgeon Bay, it had been the place for so many of those things since the kids were small.

Now, as I write this blog, Luke is a sophomore at UW-Stout, and the things that excited him as a child, have grown with him as well, including fishing, and even designing and creating his own fly rods. So of course, we involved that in his session.

I spent years in a chain portrait studio running from five minute photo sessions to ten minute sales pitches for people whose names I didn’t have time to learn. When I left, I left running. My experience there didn’t feel at all like what I knew photography to be at its core — a way to express who the people are, what they love, and how they care for one another. And it’s because of people like the Bousley family, who took a chance on us in those early years, that we now get to do exactly what we love to do, the way we love to do it.

Photography is deeply personal and that means no session should feel the same or look the same. It is our job to get to know our clients so the images we make can intuitively feel like who you are. Senior sessions are even more so this way because it’s about a single person, nearly ready to launch into their adult life, finding a way to honor what brought them this far and what comes next. It feels like a big calling to me, even if it’s just ink on paper.

Cheers, Bousley family! Can’t wait to see what comes next.
