Ridges Sanctuary in Baileys Harbor is one of the most underrated session locations in Door County. It has a pretty boardwalk with a covered bridge that passes through the woods, it has tall grasses, a range light, and a sandy beach. The reason I think people pass it up is because it’s lake side, which means no sunset.

The aesthetic of beach photos here is certainly different, no orange-pink sun, no heightened contrast, but there is a softer beauty as well. When we’re on the lake side of Door County at dusk, we get this cool, even light that allows the water and sky to show off their true blues and focus in on the portrait itself. This can be such a great match for senior photos.
Door County Senior Photographers
When Lucy chose Ridges Sanctuary for her senior session location, I was so excited because I knew exactly how beautiful it would be. I hike there with my family and I know the trails and beach well. Despite this, we’ve only photographed one other session there, a surprise proposal at midday in July, so the light was completely different and I couldn’t share great sample photos of what her session could look like at that location.

For some people, going on location description alone feels like too much blind trust, even with reassurance that the location photographs beautifully. I was so happy that Lucy felt sure of her choice and was open to wandering the grounds, exploring everything from woods to field to beach.
Lucy is a high school senior in Sturgeon Bay, unlike many of the destination Door County sessions we photograph, she’s local to the area. We are looking forward to seeing what comes next for Lucy!
