Oftentimes we spend our photography sessions chasing tots with our camera, willing them to freeze for even a half a second. Or sometimes we’re teasing smiles out of young kiddos who have just learned their “cheese smile” to the chagrin of parents everywhere. And those who have older children can often feel forgotten. The kids are growing (maybe they’re rolling their eyes at the idea of family photos) and you’re just not sure what “family pictures” look like for your loved ones at this age.

Often parents assume that when middle school strikes their opportunity for casual, candid photos with their family has passed and it’s time to settle in for rushed mini sessions or just a quick “everyone look at the camera” Christmas card photo at a chain studio. But in reality, there are lots of ways to get a great mix of posed and lifestyle images that truly feel like your family. (It might seem silly while you’re taking them, but the images will speak for themselves.) This is how it was for the Nelson Family.
Fonferek Glen Winter Family Photos
When Kristin mentioned her vision for her session included natural, playful images for her family of five and worried over what that would look like, “even Pinterest doesn’t show much for casual, fun photos with older kids,” she said. But I knew just the mood. We planned for a rustic setting in the Green Bay Area, which was a perfect match for the fresh dusting of snow in the woods and around the granary building at Fonferek Glen that wintery afternoon.
It’s magical to me that every session can be so different because every family is so different, and the same was true here. Wishing a happy holidays to the Nelson family and to you and yours!
